A fissure sealant is a plastic coating which bonds into the grooves of the chewing surface of a tooth, as a means of helping to prevent the formation of tooth decay. Some back teeth, especially molars, are difficult to clean because the grooves in the chewing part of the tooth are deep and narrow.

The result is that the surface of the tooth is more cleansable reducing the risk of decay.
